What is a search engine (or search engine robot)?
Search engines are websites where you can type in words and phrases called "keywords" in order to help you find what you are re looking for on the Internet (or World Wide Web).
It is important to be indexed on as many search engines as possible, however although a few search engines still offer listings as a free service, some of them are now starting to charge fees.
There are several ways in which a search engine will look at a website that has been submitted. For example, with Yahoo! humans view websites to determine whether or not they match theiir criteria for listing, while Google uses a "spider" (an automated way of crawling all over a website, looking for the the necessary elements it expects to find). Automated search engines such as Google are often referred to as "robots," since the websites they list are not viewed by humans during this process.
